On to the next chapter, quite literally

When I recently realised my much-loved blog had lost its domain name and theme (apologies for whatever the heck was going on there), I decided I urgently needed to update my domain name. To my blogging friends (you know who you are), I will always be “The Cat’s Write,” but I’ve decided I will be publishing my books under my married name of “Milly Rogers” (nee Schmidt).

Changing your brand so late in the game is probably not the best idea, but I have always loved my husband’s last name and wanted to share that decision with you all. I’m looking forward to finding my long-lost blogging friends and seeing who is still here after all this time. It’s been three long years since I last posted, and SO MUCH has changed in my life during that time (and the landscape of WordPress has changed a bit too!)

Since my last blog post, I sold my house in the country, got married, moved, bought a house and moved (again!) permanently to the beach. All of this could not have been possible without my husband, who was also keen to move back to the coast, as he grew up by the ocean. Daily beach walks, inlet adventures, paddle boarding excursions, and picnics by the sea are now regular occurrences for us, and we understand how lucky we are that this is our life now. I am also finally living my dream of being a writer by the beach.

Most importantly, we got a new cat since I last posted!! Meet Bonsai the undocumented ragdoll we bought from a shelter (who ended up with FIP). While spending 7k of our emergency savings to save his life was a crazy three-month experience (we didn’t know the initial cost until we were knee deep in treatment), I feel utterly privileged I could easily access treatment here in Australia and would do it all over again. The said expensive kitty here:

While I still haven’t come close to self-publishing my novels (I am still in the “how the heck do I find an editor I can afford” stage), I will never stop trying. While I still don’t think my stories are good enough to publish *just yet*… as the late Alan Rickman used to say, never give up, never surrender. So it’s onto the next story, the next book, the next chapter 🙂

    Sounds idyllic!

My advice would be don’t waste your money on an editor. Have you read many published novels recently? Since getting back into reading I’ve been shocked at how low standards are, and would conclude that most editors don’t know their colophon from their back matter. Why not get a few of your most literate friends to read your manuscript and see if they notice any inconsistencies – continuity and the like – or anything that doesn’t work for them? They, after all, are the readers – if it works for them, who needs an editor? Once you’re happy with the manuscript, you could get them to read through again and highlight any typos or grammatical problems. And read through again yourself, looking for the same. That’s the way I approached it. Readers of the final version all appear to be very happy, and so far only one error has been found in my (self) published novel, which is pretty good going.

Oh, by the way – welcome back!

Life is never gonna just settle for you to live on it, you have to be prepared for the inevitable changes that comes with it. I think it’s beautiful that you accept the way your life is right now and that you never give up.

Long time no see in my inbox! What a nice surprise! Congrats on getting married 🙂 And Bonsai is a total sweetie. Thanks for sharing the pic ☺️

Hah, funny you should mention editors. Since your last post, I’ve started doing some editing jobs for a couple of indie author friends of mine who also can’t afford a trained, pro editor 😂 And as an independent writer myself, I totally get the struggle. Hope you’re able to find someone who’s a good match (and affordable)!

I’ve been waiting for your novel to release for a while now (specifically the one that had a cover posted on your old site). I’m glad to hear you’re still writing!

Married life definitely makes keeping a blog active a lot more difficult. Blessings to you and yours!
