How much money can you make from blogging?

I wanted to clear this up so you could all know the dead-set, honest truth about the amount of money I make from my blog in regards to ads (using the WordAds program).

And the results are… based on 7,000 views a month, I make the princely sum of $3.00 USD.

Yes, you must be absolutely astounded, I’m now rich!! And even better, I can’t withdraw this money from WordAds until I make over $100 USD (which shall occur sometime in 2021). I want my vanilla latte now, damn it!

BUT… my wonderful results are not completely useless. They tell us that once you reach one million views on your blog, you could make anywhere from $400-500 USD a month, which could work as a supplmentary income if you live in a yurt.

If you don’t live in a yurt, your blog will need something extra spicy to offer readers if you want to earn the title of “professional blogger”, a.k.a. someone who actually makes a living from blogging or a.k.a. someone who is not me.

If you’re serious about using your blog to supplement your income (or replace it), Problogger does a pretty decent job of listing the various ways you can make money from your blog.

I can’t lie to you guys though. I’m actually super excited that I earned something from my blog. Considering I never expected to make much, I can now buy one vanilla latte a month from my ad revenue, which was more than I made last year! So I figure I’m going up in the world. Up and up and up.

    I’ve just started out using WordAds, literally today. I’m going to give it a go as we had a good amount of US traffic on our previous site which was on Blogger.
    I’ve been researching WordAds for the past few weeks and there seems to be very little on it. But I found this article and I enjoyed the humor.

    As a new blogger this would be highly discouraging…if I thought I was going to get rich. It is an interesting perspective though since most of the blogs I’ve seen about making money blogging talk big numbers

    Good Post! I fill you there I haven’t made any money from my post yet either only $0.50. But keep going. That’s a big achievement to make that $3. It reminds us all that its not an overnight thing to become rich off a blog. Still you have a nice Blog keep up the good work! 🙂

    This is an excellent post! I think a lot of people looking to make money blogging don’t realize it’s not going to make them rich overnight and it’s important to be able to be patient as well as consistent when it comes to earning by blogging.

    As someone who enjoys blogging and interacting with the community, its interesting to read how very little you make from the ads. As a reader, I find the ads incredibly annoying and will often stop reading a post as they ads are so intrusive. I have unfollowed writers for this reason. I like their writing okay, but not enough to put up with the adds, and particularly not if I’m on my phone, where the text gets stuck and stopped by the ads.

    Just another point of view.

    Im on my way as well with word ads. Im behind the computer everyday making edits and making my site more marketable to viewers. I suffer from not enough likes and comments. A buddy of mine told me to get more envoled in the wordpress reader community. So ive been doing that. So far so good. Thanks for this great post. I made 28 u.s dollars last month from word ads and looking forward to its continue increase as i dive deep into the internet marketing world. It is so fascinating. Would love to share what im doing with anyone interested. 🙂

      It does help. My original blog had a modest following and then I lost them when I changed the name. Now my new blog is struggling and so I came up with a branch off blog called Words on a Page and got very involved in the WordPress Reader community, now that blog is growing, yea! Try it, they have lots of cool word prompt games, etc. and comment on other blogs. You will have new friends and followers in no time!

      Made my first 100 bucks in june took six months applying things I’ve learned. Getting it down to half the time is achievable now Made 41.84 dollars in june. Keeping my fingers crossed for julys numbers. Im not gonna get myself upset if i dont hit hundred… For july. The paid out will be more in 3 month worth of ads severed.     Hi, I waited and waited for a royalty payment for my contribution to an anthology. There were some well-known authors included and a royalty payment would make it official that I was a writer. After almost eighteen months I got under $50 Australian dollars. I could make more at work- but that’s not the point. I was paid to write.

    It is obvious you have to love to blog first, then blog to earn later. The problem with WordPress is not being allowed to fully amortize the residual income from banners and links. It would be nice if we could add those without losing an account, but even those are slow. I have done that before and ended up making the same volume of income you are here lol. With my other outlets, I hope to be able to find sponsors down the line that I can monetize. I think that is the only real way to have steady income from all the choices. Take care and keep it up. Let us know when you hit the $10 per month level.

      I was reading a writers digest article yesterday which in summary pretty much said: if you don’t enjoy blogging, it’s not really worth it for you in the long run. Like you said, you need to love to blog first, earning comes later! I’m glad I love blogging just for the sake of it, not to make money, because it’s very difficult to even cut yourself a tiny slice of the pie that is potentially on offer

    I don’t live in a yurt, but I do live on an island that has a tropical climate ranging between 75 and 90; with mangoes, bananas, coconuts, limes and avocados growing outside of my door; and the longest white sand beach in Asia (14Km). My income? $1089/month. Gee, maybe I should offer that information as a product or service to generate extra revenue.

        If you have worked, and earned enough Social Security credits, just stay healthy and when you reach 60 (I am now 67) you can have the same income. LOL

        Actually, the point of my post was to make people think about how they can exist comfortably in their senior years.

        And yes, some folks have asked me the how, when, what and where about retirement.

        I love writing, but I am not a computer whiz, so I have not idea how to market the expertise I have gained in my journey to peaceful and pleasant senior living.

    Great post! Very enlightening. If you made two blogs then you could earn $6.00 and buy a San Churro Classic Spanish hot chocolate each year ($6.50 AU). They are very tasty. Best hot chocolate I have had.

    I am doing a blog on how to build a life time residual income with an affiliate membership program. There are a lot of ways to earn money with a blog but just like everything it is a type of work. Just trying to explain what residual income is and how it works is a lot of work because most people don’t really understand it, so there is a learning curve involved. Like everything it starts with the right education and training and the self motivation.
    I have read a lot of articles like yours that say’s the ad words program is not really worth the trouble to get involved with it.

        I’m a fan of Darren Rowse and his blog ProBlogger, I have learned a lot from his blog.
        I do have a bit of a different opinion of affiliate marketing then most bloggers do.
        I don’t like the thought of trying to get my audience to spend money at an affiliate website, I would rather teach my audience how to make money.
        So I went and found an affiliate membership program that is designed for people who want to build a life time residual income.
        I am designing my blog as a training program with the goal of building a WordPress community around teaching residual income.
        I think it will be fun and I enjoy doing stuff to help people learn business stuff.

    I do this for fun and to meet people. If it were possible to bring in some serious cash I would not argue but I don’t see that happening anytime soon and it doesn’t keep me awake at night.

    I think most of us are on the same page. We enjoy writing and enjoy meeting fellow bloggers. Yes, there are a handful who go after the big bucks and good for them. Some make it and some don’t. Just not my thing.

      Yeah me too. My main aim for creating my blog was to seek and find other aspiring indie authors – which I’ve done. So right there my blog has been succesful, even if I can’t make a dime from it. I’ve learned so much and made so many friends – I just love it here 🙂

    I truly do appreciate the blunt honesty of this post. I have asked WP to clarify, but they prefer to use words like “significant traffic” and other baffling terms.
    I had already come to the conclusion that my blog was not going to make money that way–and probably why I haven’t paid for a more premium account. I was hoping that some travel group (preferably Exodus or Intrepid) would like to send me on one of their trips complimentary and report on it. Of course, they probably need more views than I have now.
    I, and obviously many others, enjoy your blog and hope that there is some way it can help you achieve monetary success. In the meantime, all I can say is that you’ve made a friend in Canada.

      Thanks, once again Anthony, for stopping by my blog 🙂 It really means a lot to read your comments!! Anyone from Canada is an instant friend in my books. One of my besties is Canadian and I love her to bits (she lives in Alberta). So one of the main reasons I bought the premium plan was to have free access to all the premium templates – that and I was curious about WordAds. Breaking news: I’ve just made another $5 for last month… so things really are going up! Lol.

    Thanks for sharing!! I have been doing a lot of research on how to make money from running a blog and it definitely isn’t a fast process! Which is just fine with me as my blog is, at least for now, more of a therapeutic outlet. If it develops into more, then all the better!

      I’ve heard of some people who get lucky and start making thousands from their blog within a few months (although I have no clue how they do it!) Sadly, the majority of us will spend years and years blogging only to make… $3 a month hahaha. My blog’s mainly a therapeutic outlet too 🙂

    You’ve confirmed my suspicion. Probloggers make an income if they are selling a product or service. Reviewers and writers sharing their work are hard pressed to charge readers. Alas, we work a day or nigjt job or have to rely on a sugar daddy/mama to support our obsession.

        Don’t even have the day job anymore, which is what allowed me to write daily. I fear going back to work for other people is dreadfully boring and soul crushing. But I’ve not do e snntboromtiin and at 260 followers after seven months if regular posts I’ve considrrenhanign it up and just working on the book. If I’d known a other the expectation of following every one back and all the engaging, which don’t get me wrong, I enjoy when I can find the time, I might not have started the blog. Diminishing stash and returns are probably why most bloggers quit. Writing will always have to come before engaging. Otherwise there’s nothing to engage about. But if no one or very few are reading, what is the point? It’s a dilemma and I guess we all have the same hours in a day and have to choose how to spend them, if we have that luxury and privilege. When I win the lottery I’ll let you know, Milly. As a cyclist and chocoholic, I do enjoy the sugar. 😜😜❤️✌️🚴🇦🇺🇨🇱

            Same with my biking. As for my blog, maybe I’ll have to let it go if few people actually read it. If someone told me you have to read dozens of other blogs every day just to get a few hundred followers, I wouldn’t have done.it. We do our best and move on. Hugs!
